  • Accepted a position at an inner-city charter school which dealt with low-achieving predominately hispanic students. The previous teacher had left without notice in the middle of the year. Consequently students were frustrated and angry when I arrived in January.

    Algebra 2: Took over a classroom which had predominately failed the first semester. Worked to get students caught up in the curriculum and overcame the obstacle of their anger and frustration.

    Geometry: Taught Geometry to students who had never succeeded at any math class and had given up and helped them catch up in the curriculum so that they could pass the district final exam.

    Extra-Curricular: Volunteered to take the "taggers" for a WEEK WITHOUT WALLS where we spent one week camping, visiting a skateboard factory and a museum of artists who had been "taggers" in the past. The project culminated in the students designing and painting their own skateboards using their spray painting techniques to produce something useful rather than graffiti.
